  6.  This  program is  shareware,  please feel free  to copy

  10.  This  document  will  serve 3  functions,  a readme.txt 
  11.  file, a Help file, and a manual.  The following 9 files 
  12.  should be included:

  15.  2. SETUPKIT.DLL    Runtime for the setup program.
  16.  3. VBRUN200.DLL    Visual Basic RUNtime Library.
  17.  4. SETUP   .EXE    Setup program.
  18.  5. JAMMIN1 .EX_    This is the executable program.
  19.  6. MCI     .VB_    Multimedia Control Interface.
  20.  7. MCICDA  .DR_    CD Audio device driver.
  21.  8. THREED  .VB_    3D Visual Basic eXtension.
  22.  9. CDPLAYER.EX_    A CD Player.

  24.  NOTE: JAMMIN  originally had  a lot  more features than 
  25.  you see here.  Version 2 will be the  full release with 
  26.  all the feature-rich options that makes you drooool. So  
  27.  enjoy this preview and please donate/register.

  29.  This program was written for several reasons: 
  30.  1. Visual Basic for Windows Ver 2.00 made it easy.
  31.  2. I was sick and tired of not being able to find a CD 
  32.     Player that acted like a real CD Player.
  33.  3. I've   always  been  curious  as  to  how  well  the 
  34.     Shareware   concept   worked.  Thats also  why   the 
  35.     donation/registration fee is only five dollars. 
  36.  
  37.  Donations:
  38.  I'm asking  for a small  donation/registration fee  to 
  39.  encourage  users  to  do  just  that,  donate/register.  
  40.  However,  if you feel JAMMIN is  worth more  than  five  
  41.  dollars,  then  by  all means  "Don't delay, mail  your 
  42.  check  TODAY!"  Remember,  I'm putting  JAMMIN  on  the  
  43.  market VIA Shareware  to see if  the concept is viable. 
  44.  You, the  user, will  determine if  Accelerated Light & 
  45.  Graphics will continue to write software for shareware.

  47.  Operation:
  48.  The workings of  JAMMIN are quite simple.  Remember, it 
  49.  works like a real CD Player.
  50.  
  51.  Power: None of the controls work without power with the
  52.  exception of the About Button and the Power Light which
  53.  will be  explained later in this text.   Once the power 
  54.  has been activated the  program responds by lighting up
  55.  its display  panels, and highlighting  the buttons that 
  56.  can be used.

  58.  Note: All times are in minutes:seconds format.
  59.  
  60.  Display: JAMMIN has four displays:
  61.  
  62.  1) TRACK:  In READY  mode, displays the total number of  
  63.     tracks  available  on the current CD.  In PLAY mode,
  64.     displays the current track that's being played. 
  65.  
  66.  2) LENGTH:  In READY  mode, displays the total time for 
  67.     the current CD.  In PLAY mode, displays how long the 
  68.     current track will play. This display is  static and 
  69.     only changes when the track changes.
  70.  
  71.  3) TIME: In READY  mode, displays  0:00. In PLAY  mode, 
  72.     displays  the  current  time or how long the current  
  73.     track as been playing. This display is updated twice 
  74.     every second.
  75.  
  76.  4) STATUS:  Indicates the current mode of JAMMIN. Modes 
  77.     are:READY, PLAY, NEXT, PREV, BACK, STEP, PAUSE, STOP 
  78.     and EJECT.
  79.  
  80.  5) POWER LIGHT:  The power  light, located beneath  the  
  81.     power button, is on when its black  and off when its 
  82.     white.  The  buttons and the display panels are both 
  83.     sitting on a slightly raised panel.  Double clicking 
  84.     the power light will change these panels from raised 
  85.     to inset.

  87.  CD BUTTONS: (There are no keyboard equivalents)
  88.  PREV:  Moves the head to the Previous track.
  89.  NEXT:  Moves the head to the Next track.
  90.  PLAY:  Plays the CD from the current track.
  91.  PAUSE: Pauses the CD until Pause is clicked again.
  92.  BACK:  Moves the head back about 10 seconds.
  93.  STEP:  Moves the head forward about 10 seconds.
  94.  STOP:  Stops playback of the current CD.
  95.  EJECT: Ejects the current CD from the drive.

  97.  Some  of  these buttons  may  not work on  your  CD ROM 
  98.  Drive.  For example,  some CD ROM Drives don't have the 
  99.  ability  to eject a CD.  In this case  the EJECT button 
  100.  will still be enabled, but  nothing should happen  when 
  101.  clicked.  I say  should, since I  don't know  what will 
  102.  happen.  All the  CD ROM drives I have  tested  this on 
  103.  have the capability to eject.

  105.  History of JAMMIN:  THE ULTIMATE  MUSIC BOX  Ver  1.00,
  106.  JAMMIN Version 1.00 was  conceived  when I purchased an
  107.  old 8088  machine that  was being  sold on close-out as 
  108.  a multimedia  machine (Yeah, right). At the time Sony's 
  109.  CD ROM drive was selling for $600.00 plus.  This CD ROM 
  110.  was $500.00 and it came with an 8088 machine, keyboard, 
  111.  512K VGA Card, and a 40 meg IDE Hard Drive which sounds 
  112.  like a tank without a muffler.  Naturally, I ripped out 
  113.  the CD ROM  Drive and  shoved  it in my  386 machine. I 
  114.  bought a pair of speakers  and began searching for a CD 
  115.  Player to play back my  audio CD's.  Well I found quite 
  116.  a  few, but  none of which I liked very much.  Further- 
  117.  more, I wanted more,  at least  (and  I don't know why)
  118.  a CD Player  that acted like a real CD Player that  you  
  119.  purchase  at your  local Wal-Mart, Sears,  or any other 
  120.  retail outlet.  By this, I mean  the  interface  should 
  121.  look like the one on your stereo.  There  should  be no 
  122.  slider bars.  It  had to  have  a  power button, and so 
  123.  on.  The  only  thing  that I didn't  put  in JAMMIN is 
  124.  a digital readout that looks like either an LED or LCD.
  125.  That feature I have reserved for Version 2.00.

  127.  JAMMIN Version History:
  128.  
  129.  1.00 Release date:  March  1993  -  The program  works, 
  130.       however I  didn't  include all the  support  files 
  131.       that where  needed to  get the program  running. I 
  132.       didnt know which files where needed. I know have a
  133.       fool proof way of checking for support files.
  134.  
  135.  1.00 Release date:  May  1993  -  Included  all support 
  136.       files.
  137.  
  138.  1.01 Release date:  October 1993  -  Added   a    setup 
  139.       program   that   copies   support   files  to  the 
  140.       \windows\system  directories  and the JAMMIN files 
  141.       to the directory of your choice. (Registered users
  142.       will  receive  a  free  upgrade  to version 1.01.)
  143.       Two very important files,  both of which come with  
  144.       Windows  and  are on disk #4  (1.44 disks)  of the 
  145.       Microsoft Windows 3.1 distribution set.
  146.  
  147.       MCICDA  .DRV  Windows CD-ROM driver, included with  
  148.                     windows.  Windows does not load this
  149.                     on your system.  This file  needs to
  150.                     be in the \windows\system directory.    
  151.  
  152.                     Insert  disk  #4  of  the  Microsoft 
  153.                     Windows  3.1  distribution   set  in 
  154.                     drive A: and  double  click  on  the
  155.                     CONTROL PANEL icon then double click
  156.                     on  the DRIVERS icon.  Then click on 
  157.                     the ADD  button.  A dialog  box will 
  158.                     appear  with  a  list  of  available 
  159.                     drivers.  Select       [MCI]CD AUDIO
  160.                     and click on the OK button.  Windows
  161.                     will  let  you know  if you  already
  162.                     have the  driver  installed  on your
  163.                     system.  If this  driver  is  not on 
  164.                     your system, then windows  will load
  165.                     it for you.
  166.  
  167.       MMSYSTEM.DLL  Multimedia  System  library, Windows 
  168.                     does load this file onto your system
  169.                     and it is not included on the JAMMIN
  170.                     disk. However If this file is not on 
  171.                     your  system  JAMMIN  will not  run.
  172.                     Some people may remove certain files 
  173.                     to regain disk space.
  174.     
  175.       CDPLAYER.EXE  Plays a  CD  in the  background. The 
  176.                     cost of  updating the JAMMIN display
  177.                     once every second can take it's toll
  178.                     on  even  the  fastest  system.  For 
  179.                     those times when you dont care about
  180.                     status  information,  run  CDPLAYER.
  181.                     Executing the  CDPLAYER  application 
  182.                     starts the  CD Player  playing, this
  183.                     is the  only feedback  you'll  hear,
  184.                     and you won't see a window.
  185.                                   -( HINT )-
  186.                     Once you exit windows your CD Player
  187.                     should  continue to run even if your
  188.                     at the DOS prompt. A few Guidelines:
  189.                     1) You must have  a CD in  the drive
  190.                        before  you  double-click  on the 
  191.                        CD Player icon.
  192.                     2) Once playback has begun, the only 
  193.                        way to stop  it is to  run JAMMIN
  194.                        and click on the stop button.  Or
  195.                        let it run it's course.

  197.       SETUP   .EXE  Installs the JAMMIN program  on your 
  198.                     system  and creates a Program Group.
  199.  
  200.       SETUPKIT.DLL  A file used by the setup program.
  201.  
  202.  WARNING: Setup needs  VBRUN200.DLL,  SETUPKIT.DLL,  and 
  203.           SETUP.EXE  to  run.  If  you have  the  JAMMIN
  204.           version  without  VBRUN200.DLL, you  can't run 
  205.           SETUP or JAMMIN unless  you have  or obtain  a 
  206.           copy of VBRUN200.DLL.

  208.  NOTE: The fastest  way to  setup JAMMIN is to  copy all 
  209.        files on the  distribution disk  into a temporary
  210.        directory on  your hard  drive and run  the setup 
  211.        program from there.  This procedure will  cut the
  212.        setup time to less than 1/3 of setting  up from a
  213.        floppy.  (If you have  the disk space, this works
  214.        for larger applications such as Microsoft Excel.)
  215.        Dont forget  to delete  the  temporary  directory 
  216.        when setup is done.
  217.  
  218.  SUPER VGA Users: Problems have been reported  using the
  219.        larger fonts on some  super VGA cards while using
  220.        the super VGA mode. If your using JAMMIN in super
  221.        VGA mode  and the  captions beneath  the  buttons
  222.        dont line up, try a differant font and/or a lower 
  223.        resolution.

  239.  Qwirks (other than the misspelling of quirks): The only
  240.  quirk that I've  found  is that with a  CD in the drive
  241.  while  the drive is  not playing, if  the NEXT or  PREV 
  242.  track  buttons  are  clicked, on  some  discs  it  will 
  243.  advance  to the  next track, on  other discs  (for some 
  244.  reason)  it  will  not advance.  I don't  know what  is 
  245.  causing  this, but I do  hope to have  it  fixed by the 
  246.  version 2.00. Any  help on this matter would be greatly 
  247.  appreciated.

  249.  JAMMIN: CD ROM GHETTO BLASTER VERSION 2.00
  250.  o  A filing system to catalog  your CD's and allow  the 
  251.     CD Player to  display  the current  song  and  title 
  252.     during playback.  
  253.  o  Auto  recognition  -  I.E. When a CD is  inserted it 
  254.     will  automatically pull  up the  Author/Title  song 
  255.     list.
  256.  o  Shuffle, Continuous, and Repeat Playback.
  257.  o  Time remaining display.
  258.  o  Total time for programmed playback.
  259.  o  And lots more if I can squeeze it all in.
